1999
Alphil Guilaran and Bobby Ning develop the “Financial Literacy for Students” curriculum with the idea of starting a financial literacy student club at a university campus in British Columbia, Canada.
2000
Alphil meets with the President of a university about leaving a legacy of financial literacy to curb the social costs of being financially illiterate. Soon after, Bobby and Alphil pioneer the Financial Literacy Association at a local university campus in British Columbia, Canada.
2001
A forward-thinking municipal government commissions the Financial Literacy Counsel to develop a “Financial Literacy for Teens” program for the public library network.
The municipal government program is further expanded to include curricula and resources for seniors, couples, entrepreneurs, and Canadians dealing with financial abuse of aging parents.
The Financial Literacy Counsel is hired to develop and deliver a curriculum to help children in high net worth environments learn about financial literacy skills. The curriculum continues to be delivered to private schools and Ivy League preparatory schools.
2002
Alphil and Bobby meet with the Provincial Finance Minister to discuss integrating financial literacy into the curriculum of every British Columbia high school.
The BC Ministry of Education reviews the concept of including financial literacy into the Career and Personal Planning Program (CAPP), provided in all BC high schools, for 2005.
The Financial Literacy Counsel’s Financial Counseling Division is born through a partnership with Customplan Financial Advisors, due to requests for financial and investment counseling, advice, and solutions from students and participants.
The Financial Literacy Counsel’s “Saving By Grace” program is developed to equip local churches and faith-based institutions with financial literacy skills.
2003
An accounting association commissions the Financial Literacy Counsel and Customplan Financial Advisors to develop professional development courses and resources for accounting practitioners in Canada. The mandate included developing the following programs and resources: “Inter-generational wealth transfer strategies”, “Dealing with Insolvency” for closely held family enterprises, and the “Benefits and Uses of Life Insurance in Estate and Business Succession Planning”.
The BC Ministry of Education makes it mandatory for every high school student to complete financial literacy as part of the Career and Personal Planning Program (CAPP).
Five of the largest school districts in British Columbia host the Financial Literacy Counsel into their Economics, CAPP, and Business Education classrooms as part of a pilot program.
2004
The Financial Literacy Counsel pioneers a tax preparation and financial literacy clinic for medical undergraduates to help future medical practitioners pay off loans, manage finances, and achieve work / life balance.
The Financial Literacy Counsel begins a financial literacy and portfolio management series at a local university. Industry professionals from global investment firms and institutions give students a first-hand look at real life and real time case studies of how they manage and oversee pension funds and mutual funds.
2005
Leaders from UBC’s Health Sciences community invite the Financial Literacy Counsel to take part as keynote speakers in the area of financial literacy for healthcare professionals. The conference was hosted by the National Health Sciences Student Association and sponsored by UBC and Health Canada.
The Financial Literacy Counsel duplicates the success of the medical school tax and financial literacy clinic for dental undergraduates.
2006
UBC’s University Industry Liaison Office and the UBC Entrepreneurship 101 Program invite the Financial Literacy Counsel to deliver financial literacy and entrepreneurship courses.
SEEDS / Service Canada (Self Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society) awards the Financial Literacy Counsel a mandate to deliver financial education for non-finance professionals as part of their one-year program.
2007
SEEDS / Service Canada awards the Financial Literacy Counsel a contract to instruct the financial education component of the Tree of Life Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Program.
Daysprings Publishing to publish the Financial Literacy Counsel’s first book.
2008
The “Financial Literacy for Couples” series is developed for Tenth Avenue Alliance Church as part of the “Saving By Grace” Program.
The “Financial Literacy @ Coastal Church” series is developed for Coastal Church.
“Financial Literacy @ WORK” Program is developed to provide employers and employees with timely on-site financial counseling, resources, and workshops.
